Daniel Hillier hit a hole-in-one on the 187-yard par-3 17th hole at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid to win an all-electric BMW iX5 SUV.
Daniel Hillier carded a 4-under 67 during the first round of the Spanish Open on Thursday, aided by a hole-in-one on the 187-yard par-3 17th. The 28-year-old New Zealander utilized an 8-iron for the ace, which secured him an all-electric BMW iX5 SUV valued at 140,338 euros (approximately $157,000). The ball pitched pin high and took a single hop to the left before dropping into the cup.
Despite the result, Hillier described the shot as a mishit that he "toed quite a bit." The achievement marked his fifth career hole-in-one and moved him into a tie for fourth place at the conclusion of Thursday's play. The vehicle prize was reserved exclusively for the first player to ace the 17th hole during the tournament week.
Grant Forrest, Connor Syme, and Eugenio Chacarra share the lead at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid after posting opening rounds of 5-under 66. Sergio Garcia sits one stroke behind the leaders, alongside Hillier and others tied for fourth. Hillier entered the event having already won his national open in March.
