Devils Sign Luke Evangelista to Five-Year Extension After Trade From Predators

New Jersey Devils general manager Sunny Mehta announced Tuesday night that the club has signed forward Luke Evangelista to a five-year contract extension totaling $36.25 million. The deal, which carries a $7.25 million average annual value, is set to begin with the 2027-28 season. The 24-year-old is currently playing under a contract worth $3 million that runs through the conclusion of this season.

According to ESPN, the Devils acquired Evangelista from the Nashville Predators on Sept. 1 in exchange for a 2028 conditional first-round pick via the Colorado Avalanche and a 2028 second-round selection. The 2020 second-round pick recorded a career-high 56 points and 12 goals across 81 games during the previous campaign.

Mehta, who assumed his role on April 16, has made several roster adjustments to bolster an offense that averaged 2.76 goals per game last season, the sixth-fewest in the NHL. In addition to securing Evangelista, the front office traded for two-time Stanley Cup champion Evan Rodrigues from the Florida Panthers and signed free-agent winger Anthony Mantha from the Pittsburgh Penguins. These moves follow a season where New Jersey finished 12 points behind the final Eastern Conference playoff position.
