Goaltender Casey DeSmith signed a two-year, $5 million extension with the Dallas Stars that runs through the 2028-29 season.
The Dallas Stars announced a two-year, $5 million contract extension for backup goaltender Casey DeSmith on Wednesday. The agreement keeps the 35-year-old under contract through the 2028-29 season, potentially maintaining the goaltending tandem of DeSmith and Jake Oettinger for five consecutive years.
Since joining Dallas as a free agent, DeSmith has posted a 29-16-8 record across two seasons. During that span, he recorded a .911 save percentage, a 2.50 goals-against average, and three shutouts. Early in the 2025-26 campaign, the New Hampshire native established a franchise record with a 13-game point streak that included nine wins, though Oettinger later surpassed that mark by one game.
DeSmith has performed notably well in away games, ranking third in save percentage (.918) and tied for second in goals-against average (2.34) among NHL goaltenders with at least 10 road starts over the last two years. General manager Jim Nill described the veteran as "incredibly reliable" while confirming the extension was a priority for the organization.
Over an eight-season career spanning 220 games, DeSmith holds a 99-69-29 record with a .910 save percentage and 2.74 goals-against average. He currently ranks fifth among active American-born goaltenders with 13 career shutouts.
