The Detroit Tigers traded back-to-back Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers for a package featuring River Ryan and Zyhir Hope.

Skubal, the reigning back-to-back American League Cy Young Award winner, joins Los Angeles after Detroit officially pivoted to selling following a July 29 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. In that contest, the Tigers surrendered a 7-0 lead to lose in 12 innings, falling to a 51-58 record. The trade was finalized at 11:31 p.m. ET after medical reviews were completed by Dodgers team doctor Neal ElAttrache, who previously performed surgery on Skubal’s elbow on May 7 to remove bone chips.

Detroit’s decision to move their ace came after a disastrous 6-22 record in May, despite the team posting the American League's best record and MLB's top run differential in all other months. The Tigers received right-hander River Ryan, a 28-year-old who posted a 1.33 ERA in 20.1 innings for the Dodgers in 2024 before undergoing Tommy John surgery. Ryan, an 11th-round pick who converted from shortstop, currently holds a 4.46 ERA in the Pacific Coast League with 43 strikeouts and eight walks over 36.1 innings. Joining him in the return is Zyhir Hope, a 5-foot-10, 230-pound outfielder who was scratched from the Double-A Tulsa lineup 10 minutes before first pitch to facilitate the deal. High-A right-hander Brady Smith completed the three-player return for Detroit.

Detroit Tigers President of Baseball Operations Scott Harris initiated the final bidding process on Saturday afternoon to avoid the Monday 6 p.m. ET trade deadline. The Tigers feared the market might collapse if suitors pivoted to Seattle Mariners right-hander George Kirby, who remains under team control through 2028. Skubal is scheduled to reach free agency after the current season, where he is expected to seek a contract exceeding $400 million. Several teams engaged in the sweepstakes, including the Tampa Bay Rays, who refused to include top prospect Theo Gillen. The New York Yankees also declined to trade shortstop George Lombard Jr., while the Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves failed to match the Dodgers' offer.

The Milwaukee Brewers emerged as the primary runner-up, offering a package centered on 19-year-old shortstop Luis Peña. Milwaukee, which operates with a $144 million payroll compared to the Dodgers' $339 million cash payroll and $180 million luxury tax bill, deemed several prospects untouchable. Shortstop Jesús Made, the sport's top-ranked prospect, was excluded from talks, as were Cooper Pratt, Luis Lara, and right-hander Logan Henderson. Following the failed Skubal pursuit, the Brewers acquired right-hander Dustin May and left-hander JoJo Romero from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for outfielders Alexander Frias and Josiah Ragsdale.

The position player core includes All-Star catcher Dillon Dingler, rookie shortstop Kevin McGonigle, and outfielder Riley Greene.
