Fernando Tatis Jr. Robs Grand Slam, Hits Two Homers in Padres' 5-2 Win

Fernando Tatis Jr. set a team record with his 18th career leadoff home run and robbed Francisco Lindor of a grand slam in a 5-2 victory over the Mets.

Fernando Tatis Jr. powered the San Diego Padres to a 5-2 victory over the New York Mets on Tuesday night, hitting two home runs and robbing Francisco Lindor of a grand slam. Tatis ignited the offense by launching the first pitch he saw from Zac Thornton 452 feet into the second deck of the left-field stands. This blast marked his 18th career leadoff home run, establishing a new San Diego franchise record. The outfielder later extended the lead in the fifth inning by connecting for a two-run shot off Thornton, bringing his season total to 15 home runs despite starting the year with a 238 at-bat drought without a long ball.

Defensive Heroics at the Wall

In the second inning, Tatis delivered his most significant contribution in the field by leaping over the right-field wall to pull back a potential grand slam from Francisco Lindor. After securing the catch, Tatis landed and stood motionless, staring straight ahead, which briefly left spectators and players uncertain of the outcome. He eventually revealed the ball in his glove, prompting Padres pitcher Robbie Ray to celebrate by raising his arms and placing his own glove on his head. This defensive gem occurred just 24 hours after New York outfielders Carson Benge and A.J. Ewing had combined to record three assists by throwing out Padres runners at home plate.

Pitching Lines and Statistical Milestones

Robbie Ray earned his 11th win of the season, improving his record to 11-7. In six innings of work, the left-hander allowed three hits and one run while striking out four batters. This performance represented Ray's first victory since joining San Diego via a trade deadline deal with the San Francisco Giants. Mason Miller closed the game in the ninth inning, recording two strikeouts to secure his 31st save of the year. The Padres have now won 18 of their last 24 games since July 24, the best record in Major League Baseball during that span.

Mets Offensive Efforts and Thornton’s Start

New York starter Zac Thornton fell to 3-4 on the season after yielding three runs across five innings. Despite the loss, Thornton matched his career high by striking out seven San Diego batters. The Mets offense produced two solo home runs, the first coming from Luis Torrens off Ray. Later, in the eighth inning, Luis Robert Jr. added a solo blast to cut into the lead. The Mets moved to a 10-4 record since the trade deadline following the result of this Tuesday night contest.

Late Inning Insurance and Season Totals

San Diego added insurance runs in the final third of the game to maintain their advantage. Ty France drove in a run with a single in the seventh inning to make it a 4-1 game. In the ninth inning, Manny Machado provided the final margin by hitting his 24th home run of the season, a solo shot that pushed the score to 5-2. The Padres totaled five runs in the contest, overcoming the Mets' two-run effort at home. Tatis’ two home runs and his robbery of four potential runs in the second inning proved to be the statistical difference in the three-run victory.
