The Philadelphia Flyers fell to 0-5-2 on the season after a 4-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday night. The defeat marks the worst start in franchise history, surpassing previous six-game winless openings in 1999-00 and 2008-09. Philadelphia has been outscored 28-8 through seven games and remains the only winless team in the NHL's Eastern Conference.
General manager Danny Briere noted the team lacks a superstar capable of scoring four or five goals to win games single-handedly. Forward Trevor Zegras, who signed a four-year, $36.5 million extension, has recorded two points and zero goals this season. The roster is currently playing without injured forward Travis Konecny and defensemen Cam York and Rasmus Ristolainen.
During the final minutes of Sunday's game, fans at the arena chanted "Fire Tocchet!" directed at head coach Rick Tocchet. The Flyers have now lost 13 of their last 14 games dating back to the previous postseason, a stretch that includes a 7-0 shutout loss to Pittsburgh on opening night. Despite the winless streak, captain Sean Couturier stated the team will not quit and must focus on grinding through the next practice.
