George Lombard Jr. and Heliot Ramos Join Yankees Lineup; Volpe, Dominguez Optioned

George Lombard Jr. and trade acquisition Heliot Ramos entered the Yankees lineup Tuesday as Anthony Volpe and Jasson Dominguez were optioned to Triple-A.

The New York Yankees integrated shortstop George Lombard Jr. and outfielder Heliot Ramos into the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals. Lombard, the organization's 2023 first-round pick, batted eighth and played shortstop, while Ramos hit fourth and played left field. To facilitate these roster moves, the Yankees optioned shortstop Anthony Volpe and outfielder Jasson Dominguez to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre. Additionally, the club promoted Yerry De Los Santos to the bullpen, replacing Angel Chivilli, who surrendered three home runs in the eighth inning of Monday's contest, including Alec Burleson's third homer of that game.

Lombard arrives in the Bronx following a productive stint across two minor league levels. He began the season with Double-A Somerset, where he hit .312 over 20 games. After a promotion to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre, he recorded a .268 average with six home runs and 21 RBIs in 56 games. His tenure in Triple-A included a month-long absence due to a left finger injury. Since returning from that injury, Lombard has batted .377 over 14 games, highlighted by a Sunday performance against Iowa where he went 4-for-5 with three RBIs in a 13-3 victory. Manager Aaron Boone noted that Lombard has "checked a lot of boxes" during an outstanding year of development.

Roster Shifts and Trade Deadline Context

General Manager Brian Cashman revealed on Monday that both the Detroit Tigers and Baltimore Orioles had requested Lombard in trade discussions for Tarik Skubal and Adley Rutschman. Those players were eventually acquired by the Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox, respectively. Lombard’s father, George Sr., is currently the bench coach for Detroit and previously served as the Dodgers' first-base coach from 2016 to 2020, following a 144-game major league playing career.

Heliot Ramos joined the Yankees via trade from the San Francisco Giants, where he posted a .264 average, nine home runs, and 34 RBIs in 74 games this season. Defensively, Ramos has recorded zero errors in 111 chances in left field this year, a significant improvement after leading National League left fielders with nine errors last season. He is expected to receive the majority of his playing time in left field, where he has already made 64 starts this year.

Performance Declines Lead to Options

Anthony Volpe returns to Triple-A after struggling at the plate, going 1-for-15 over his last five games. Through 56 games this season, Volpe batted .240 with one home run and 19 RBIs. This follows a 2023 campaign where he hit .212 with 19 homers and 72 RBIs in 153 games. Volpe’s recent history includes a torn labrum in his left shoulder sustained in May 2023, which required surgery on Oct. 14. The Yankees intend for Volpe to log innings at second base during his time with Scranton/Wilkes Barre.

Jasson Dominguez was also sent down after hitting .230 with six home runs and 14 RBIs this season. Dominguez’s year was hampered by a left shoulder sprain suffered on May 7 against Texas when he collided with the left-field scoreboard. He had been with the major league club since his call-up on April 28.

Bullpen Adjustments and Pitching Stats

In the bullpen, Yerry De Los Santos takes the place of Angel Chivilli. De Los Santos enters with a 1.04 ERA across five appearances for the Yankees. Chivilli, acquired from Colorado in January, holds a 1-1 record with a 3.78 ERA in 15 appearances. His demotion followed the Monday outing where he allowed three eighth-inning home runs. The Yankees continue to shuffle their roster as they integrate the new additions into the daily lineup against St. Louis.
