This roster overhaul follows a 13-7 defeat against the St. Louis Cardinals and includes the demotion of outfielder Jasson Dominguez to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. To fill the vacancy in the outfield, the club added Heliot Ramos, who was acquired from the San Francisco Giants earlier on Monday. Lombard arrives in the Bronx after a productive stint in Triple-A, where he posted a .268 batting average, six home runs, and a .845 OPS across 56 games.

Lombard’s promotion comes despite a mid-June injury where he sprained two fingers on his left hand, an ailment that sidelined him for nearly a month. Since returning to the lineup, the infielder has recorded a .377 batting average and a 1.081 OPS over 65 plate appearances in 14 games. While the Yankees expect him to primarily handle shortstop duties in the major leagues, he has also logged 11 starts at third base this season. General manager Brian Cashman confirmed on Monday that he sought shortstop upgrades before the trade deadline but found no suitable deals, stating that the organization evaluated all marketplace opportunities without finding clear upgrades over their internal talent.

Anthony Volpe’s Struggles and Triple-A Assignment

Anthony Volpe, 25, returns to the minors after batting .240 with just one home run and a .646 OPS through 56 games this season. The former Gold Glove winner has struggled to maintain offensive consistency since his 2023 debut, during which he hit 21 home runs and stole 24 bases. His career .660 OPS currently ranks 155th out of 158 MLB hitters with at least 1,500 plate appearances since 2023. Volpe’s recent tenure included splitting time at shortstop with Jose Caballero after being activated from the injured list on May 4 following arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder.

Jasson Dominguez and Roster Adjustments

Jasson Dominguez joins Volpe in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after failing to secure a permanent role during Aaron Judge’s absence. The switch-hitter carries a .230 batting average with six home runs and a .653 OPS this year. His season was interrupted by a shoulder injury sustained in early May when he collided with the Yankee Stadium wall, leading to a month-long absence. The Yankees determined that his current production did not justify a spot on the active roster over the incoming Ramos or the surging Lombard.

George Lombard Jr. began his 2024 campaign in Double-A before earning a promotion to Triple-A in late April.
