Guardians Secure Third Straight AL Central Crown and First-Round Bye

Cleveland defeated Kansas City 11-5 on Saturday to clinch the division, aided by a Chicago White Sox 9-6 loss to the Colorado Rockies.

The Cleveland Guardians clinched their third consecutive AL Central title and a first-round postseason bye with an 11-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday night. Pitcher Tanner Bibee earned the win at Kauffman Stadium, while the division crown was finalized following a 9-6 loss by the Chicago White Sox to the Colorado Rockies. Cleveland has now secured a postseason berth eight times since 2016 and has won seven division championships in the last 11 seasons.

Manager Stephen Vogt’s club trailed the White Sox by six games as recently as August 16. The Guardians overcame that deficit by winning 25 of their next 36 games, including a 15-6 stretch over their final 21 contests. This run occurred despite the team losing Jose Ramirez, Angel Martinez, and rookie Chase DeLauter to injuries for over a month. To bolster the roster, the front office acquired outfielder Jo Adell, first baseman Nathaniel Lowe, left-hander Foster Griffin, and right-hander Craig Yoho at the trade deadline.

Following the conclusion of the regular season on Sunday, Cleveland will remain off until hosting the American League Division Series next Saturday. The team previously secured its playoff spot with a 1-0 win against the Boston Red Sox on Thursday. Vogt becomes the eighth manager in MLB history to lead a team to the postseason in each of his first three seasons.
