Hossler, currently ranked No. 122 in the FedEx Cup, ignited his round with four consecutive birdies early on the front nine before finishing his day with a 30-foot eagle putt on the par-5 15th hole. James, the top-ranked player from PGA Tour University, matched the 62 despite a late stumble, recording eagles on both par 5s and reaching 9-under before a bogey on the 18th hole dropped him back into a tie for the lead.

Sahith Theegala, sitting safely at No. 43 in the postseason standings, produced the day’s most unconventional scorecard by recording eight birdies and one bogey to go out in 29 without a single par on the front nine. After starting with six straight birdies, Theegala parred every hole on the back nine until the 18th, where he struck his approach shot tight to the pin for a closing birdie and a 62. Eric Cole sits in fourth place alone following a 63, while a group of six players, including Matti Schmid, posted rounds of 64. The opening day at Greensboro saw 36 different players shoot 66 or lower.

Postseason Implications at Sedgefield

The Wyndham Championship serves as the final regular-season event, determining the top 70 players who qualify for the FedEx Cup playoffs. Ben James must win the tournament to move into the top 70, as he currently lacks enough points to advance otherwise. Similarly, Hossler requires a victory to secure a spot in next week’s opening playoff event. Matti Schmid, who shot 64, entered the week at No. 67 and remains on the bubble. Five other players who shot 64 on Thursday are currently positioned outside the top 70 cut-off.

Jackson Koivun, who earned his tour card through the accelerated PGA Tour University program as a sophomore, entered the week in the final playoff spot at No. 70. Koivun posted a 67 on Thursday after missing several birdie opportunities on the closing holes. Brooks Koepka, returning to the PGA Tour after four years with LIV Golf, also shot a 67. Koepka sits at No. 86 in the FedEx Cup standings and needs a high finish to extend his season into the postseason bracket.

James Challenges for 59

Ben James reached 9-under-par and had a mathematical chance at shooting 59 before a difficult three-hole stretch to end his round. After a 15-foot eagle putt on the 15th hole, he three-putted from just inside 25 feet on the par-3 16th to card a bogey. Although he recovered with a birdie on the 17th, he missed the green from the first cut of rough on the 18th hole. His subsequent chip left him with a 6-foot par putt, which he missed to finish with his second bogey in three holes. James previously held the 36-hole lead at the Canadian Open in his professional debut earlier this year.

Unlike many players in the field, James is exempt through the 2027 season regardless of his finish this week due to his No. 1 ranking in PGA Tour University. Players who finish outside the top 70 but inside the top 100 will likely need to compete in the fall slate to maintain their full cards for the 2027 season. Hossler played his final holes in 4-under-par to secure his share of the lead, emphasizing a strategy of trying to win the tournament outright rather than focusing on points projections.
