Wyndham Clark Shoots 65 to Take Five-Shot BMW Championship Lead at Bellerive

Wyndham Clark carded a 5-under 65 on Saturday to build a five-stroke lead at the BMW Championship, highlighted by an eagle and five birdies in an eight-hole span.

Wyndham Clark carded a 5-under 65 on Saturday at Bellerive to establish a five-shot lead heading into the final round of the BMW Championship. Despite opening his third round with a double bogey on the first hole, Clark recovered to produce a dominant eight-hole stretch featuring five birdies and an eagle. He enters Sunday at St. Louis with a significant cushion over Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay, who are tied for second place after rounds of 65 and 66, respectively. This marks the second time this season Clark has held a lead of at least five strokes entering a final round, following a six-shot advantage at the U.S. Open that he converted into a one-shot victory.

Clark’s round began with a pulled tee shot into heavy rough, followed by a second shot into the right rough and a missed 7-foot putt, resulting in a double bogey that briefly dropped him one shot behind Gary Woodland. The momentum shifted on the par-4 seventh when Clark answered Woodland’s 15-foot birdie with a 10-foot birdie of his own. On the par-5 eighth, Clark struck a 5-wood to 12 feet and converted the eagle putt. His putting streak continued on the back nine, where he holed a 30-foot birdie on the 10th and a 15-footer on the 11th. Consecutive 12-foot birdie putts on the 13th and 14th holes allowed him to pull away from the field.

FedEx Cup Finale Implications

Patrick Cantlay’s share of second place is critical for his postseason aspirations, as he currently sits at No. 43 in the FedEx Cup standings. He requires a high finish this week to move into the top 30 and qualify for the season finale in Atlanta. Cantlay closed his Saturday round with a birdie on the 18th to post a 66. Rory McIlroy, who recorded three consecutive birdies late in his round and saved par from a greenside bunker on the 18th for a 65, noted that his deficit is substantial but remains optimistic after shooting 64 and 65 earlier in the week.

Gary Woodland, who was tied for the lead early in the day after a 15-foot birdie on the seventh, finished with a 70. He sits six shots behind Clark in a tie for fourth with Chris Gotterup, who shot a 68. While Woodland is likely out of contention for the win, his current position is high enough to secure a spot in next week's Tour Championship. Sungjae Im sits alone in seventh place following a round of 70, needing to maintain his position to extend a streak of qualifying for East Lake every year since his 2019 rookie campaign.

Presidents Cup and Player of the Year Race

Sunday serves as the final opportunity for players to earn one of six automatic qualifying spots for the U.S. Presidents Cup team competing at Medinah. While Clark is considered a lock for the team regardless of his ranking, Ben Griffin’s chances are in jeopardy after a 68 left him tied for 35th. Justin Thomas fell into a tie for 15th place after carding a 71, while Scottie Scheffler remains 12 strokes off the lead at 15th following a 68.

A victory on Sunday would be Clark's third of the season, bolstering his candidacy for PGA Tour Player of the Year alongside his U.S. Open title. The ultimate goal for the field remains the top 30 spots for the East Lake finale, where the winner claims a $10 million payoff. Clark entered the third round having gone 36 holes without a bogey, a streak that ended immediately on Saturday's opening hole before his mid-round surge secured the five-shot cushion.
