Goaltender Igor Shesterkin suffered a right knee injury midway through the second period of the Rangers' 3-1 loss to Washington on Friday.
The New York Rangers fell 3-1 to the Washington Capitals on Friday night in a game marked by a second-period injury to goaltender Igor Shesterkin. The 30-year-old Russian netminder, who entered the contest with a 3-1 record this season, was forced to leave the game after an awkward fall into his own net. The incident occurred midway through the frame as Shesterkin attempted to scramble back into his crease after challenging a shooter.
During the play, the 2022 Vezina Trophy winner caught his skate on the post and collapsed. According to ESPN News Services, Shesterkin remained on the ice for several minutes clutching his right knee while receiving medical attention. He eventually exited the ice with the assistance of teammates, unable to put any weight on his right leg.
This injury follows a prior season where Shesterkin missed one month due to a lower-body ailment. Earlier this month, the goaltender had highlighted the Rangers' home opener by scoring an empty-net goal during a 5-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. The team did not provide an immediate update on his status following the loss in Washington.
