The New York Knicks became the first defending champion since 2011-12 to start a season 0-3 following a 111-102 defeat against the Orlando Magic.

The New York Knicks fell to a 0-3 record on Sunday after losing 111-102 to the Orlando Magic at Madison Square Garden. Despite holding a 10-point lead with 9:20 remaining in the game, the Knicks allowed 40 fourth-quarter points to surrender the advantage. The defeat makes New York the first defending NBA champion to open a season with three consecutive losses since the 2011-12 Dallas Mavericks.

Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 28 points but struggled with efficiency, shooting 12-of-28 from the field and 1-of-7 from 3-point range. As a team, New York shot 23.7% from beyond the arc, converting just 9 of 38 attempts. Orlando’s Franz Wagner fueled the Magic’s comeback by scoring 21 of his 23 points in the final period, adding 13 rebounds and nine assists to his stat line.

Knicks coach Mike Brown noted a lack of physicality and sharpness, specifically citing poor transition defense in the first half. The Magic capitalized on 10 second-half turnovers and made 8 of 18 3-pointers following the break. The Knicks, who entered the game ranked 29th in offensive efficiency, began the contest with a 12-0 run but led by only four points at halftime.

Brunson attributed the offensive struggles to his own leadership and organization, stating that the responsibility for the sputtering start falls on his shoulders. The Knicks will attempt to secure their first win of the season on Tuesday when they host the undefeated Detroit Pistons.
