Jerry Jones stated he will not make a coaching change after the Cowboys blew a 14-point lead in a 33-30 overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals.
The Dallas Cowboys fell to 3-5 following a 33-30 overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. Dallas held a 24-10 lead with 14:20 remaining in the fourth quarter after Dak Prescott scored on a 5-yard touchdown run. According to ESPN Analytics, the Cowboys maintained a 98.3% win probability while leading by 10 points with 3:24 left in regulation. The defeat matched the largest blown fourth-quarter lead in franchise history, a mark previously reached in losses to the New York Jets in 2011 and the Green Bay Packers in 2022.
Despite the collapse, owner Jerry Jones told ESPN he is not considering a Cowboys coaching change for Brian Schottenheimer. Jones stated that many people let the coach down during the game and noted that Schottenheimer, who now holds a 10-14-1 record with the team, retains his confidence. The Cowboys entered the matchup with a 202-0-1 historical record when leading by 14 or more points at home in the fourth quarter. They became the first NFL team this season to lose after holding such a lead, as teams were previously 44-0-1 in those scenarios.
Dallas now trails the 4-2-1 New York Giants in the NFC East standings. While Jones previously replaced Wade Phillips with Jason Garrett mid-season in 2010 when the team was 1-7, he indicated he does not see a similar situation currently. The Dallas staff includes senior defensive assistant Mike Pettine, who joined in Week 5 and previously served as head coach of the Cleveland Browns. Quarterback Dak Prescott defended the coaching staff, calling it "cowardly" to place the blame for the loss on a single person.
