Captain Jim Furyk noted the U.S. team has not won a Ryder Cup in Europe since a 15-13 victory at The Belfry in 1993.
U.S. captain Jim Furyk announced Tuesday that the Americans will enter the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor as underdogs. The United States has not secured a victory on European soil in 34 years, dating back to a 15-13 win led by Tom Watson at The Belfry in 1993. Since that result, European teams have won seven consecutive home matches, most recently defeating the U.S. 16.5-11.5 at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in 2023.
Furyk, who previously captained the U.S. during a 17.5-10.5 loss at Le Golf National in 2018, cited course setup advantages for European captain Luke Donald as a primary factor for the underdog status. The Americans currently hold an 8-26 record in foursomes across international competitions since the 2023 Ryder Cup. This includes a 5-0 sweep by the International team in a single foursomes session during last month's Presidents Cup, though the U.S. eventually won that event 17-13.
To address these struggles in alternate-shot formats, Furyk has appointed a new analytics team for the upcoming matches in Ireland. The U.S. squad will face a European side that has won nine of the last 12 Ryder Cups since 2002. Luke Donald enters the 2027 event seeking a third consecutive victory as captain following Europe's 15-13 win at Bethpage Black in 2025.
