Attorney John Beck confirmed Jon Rahm is leaving LIV Golf, with a separation agreement expected by Oct. 15 following the league's Chapter 11 filing.
Two-time major champion Jon Rahm is leaving the LIV Golf League and expects to finalize a separation agreement by Oct. 15, according to his attorney, John Beck. During a Wednesday hearing with U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Michael B. Kaplan, Beck stated that Rahm independently reviewed the proposed terms of "LIV 2.0" and found them unacceptable. The 31-year-old golfer, who signed a reported contract worth over $300 million in December 2023, was the circuit's individual champion for the past three seasons and a four-time winner in the league.
LIV Golf and its related entities filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Sept. 8, reporting assets between $100 million and $500 million against liabilities ranging from $500 million to $1 billion. Court records list Rahm as a creditor with a $7.5 million unsecured claim for past-due payments, though he is believed to be owed more than $100 million total. The league’s restructuring plan involves a potential $300 million investment from BC Partners, contingent on players signing new agreements consistent with a downsized business plan of 10 tournaments and smaller purses.
Rahm’s future playing status for 2027 remains uncertain. While he resolved a dispute with the DP World Tour in May, PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp stated on Sept. 15 that there are currently no plans to reinstate the Returning Member Program for golfers who joined the breakaway circuit. Other roster changes noted in court documents include the release of 2017 Masters champion Sergio Garcia from his contract. Current LIV players have until Oct. 25 to commit to the restructured league.
