The New York Knicks earned their first victory of the season by defeating the Detroit Pistons 111-97 at Madison Square Garden. Karl-Anthony Towns led the effort with 27 points and 20 rebounds, marking the 14th time in his career he has recorded at least 25 points and 20 boards. Jalen Brunson added 23 points on 5-for-18 shooting and drew a foul that disqualified Detroit defender Ausar Thompson in the fourth quarter.
New York overcame an early 15-point deficit by outscoring Detroit 63-25 during the second and third quarters. Mikal Bridges contributed four three-pointers after failing to record a successful shot from deep in the first three games of the season. The Knicks defense limited Cade Cunningham to 4-of-14 shooting after the first quarter following his high-scoring start.
The win ended a streak of three consecutive regular-season losses to the Pistons, who had defeated New York by an average of 30 points per game last season. Detroit center Paul Reed started in place of injured All-Star Jalen Duren, providing early production before Towns limited his impact in the second half. This result handed the conference-leading Pistons their first loss of the year.
