SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spent 47 minutes observing Monday's practice from a distance as he continues to recover from a concussion and other injuries sustained in a July 14 car accident. This marked the second consecutive day the coach monitored team drills without active participation, following a Sunday session where he appeared for approximately 30 minutes during a special teams period. Quarterback Brock Purdy spearheaded the offensive unit at the Santa Clara facility, navigating a modified workflow where coordinator Klay Kubiak has assumed primary play-calling duties and direct communication responsibilities.

General manager John Lynch confirmed that the organization is managing Shanahan’s return through a de facto concussion protocol, mirroring the steps required for active players. While the head coach is present on the sidelines, he is not currently utilizing his standard walkie-talkie to relay real-time feedback or play calls to Purdy. Assistant head coach Chris Foerster, who maintains his role overseeing the offensive line, has taken on a portion of the head coaching administrative duties to ensure the training camp schedule remains uninterrupted.

Klay Kubiak Takes Over Offensive Communication

With the typical playcaller-quarterback dynamic altered, Klay Kubiak is now the primary voice in Purdy’s ear during team periods. Purdy noted that Kubiak’s experience calling plays during preseason games over the last two years has facilitated a seamless transition during offensive installation. The quarterback is focusing on pushing the tempo and managing huddle mechanics to compensate for the absence of the team's primary leader in meetings.

Purdy described the environment as "weird" without Shanahan leading the situational football segments and team-wide briefings. Despite the lack of direct football conversations between the two since the accident, Purdy spoke with the coach to offer support and confirm his well-being. The quarterback initially learned of the incident through a trickle of information in the locker room, eventually confirming the news with tight end George Kittle before reaching out to Shanahan directly.

Locker Room Response and Recovery Timeline

Mandy Shanahan, the coach's wife, initiated contact with a core group of veteran leaders including Purdy, Kittle, and linebacker Fred Warner to provide updates on her husband's condition. These players spent Saturday informing the rest of the roster that the coach was healing well. Cornerback Deommodore Lenoir indicated that Shanahan’s presence on the sideline, even in a limited capacity, serves as a performance motivator for the defense, stating that making plays while the head coach watches remains a priority for the squad.

Although Shanahan is not yet running the daily meetings, his involvement increased from the opening session to the second day of camp.
