Contract talks between the Detroit Lions and Sam LaPorta have stalled after the sides failed to reach a deal during the first month of the season.

The Detroit Lions and star tight end Sam LaPorta have broken off negotiations regarding a long-term contract extension, according to sources told to NFL Network. Despite a final push on Friday and Saturday, the two sides were unable to reach an agreement during the first four weeks of the season. LaPorta, who is represented by agent Jack Bechta, had hoped to secure a deal similar to the four-year, $75 million contract signed by Green Bay Packers tight end Tucker Kraft earlier this year.

Through three games this season, the 25-year-old tight end has recorded 14 receptions for 144 yards while participating in approximately 90% of Detroit's offensive snaps. These statistics follow a 2024 campaign where LaPorta missed the final eight games due to a fully herniated disk that required surgery. As a rookie in 2023, the former second-round pick earned second-team All-Pro honors after catching 86 passes for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns.

LaPorta is currently scheduled to become a free agent in 2027, though Detroit retains the option to use the franchise tag. While the Lions have recently finalized extensions for Jahmyr Gibbs, Aidan Hutchinson, Jameson Williams, and Kerby Joseph, talks with LaPorta are now expected to wait until the upcoming offseason so the player can focus on the field. The team reportedly still holds the possibility of making another attempt to make LaPorta one of the league's highest-paid tight ends at a later date.
