Alexander Zverev's debut as the world's top-ranked player ended in a 7-6 (5), 6-2 defeat to Lorenzo Musetti at the Paris Masters.
Lorenzo Musetti defeated Alexander Zverev 7-6 (5), 6-2 in the second round of the Paris Masters on Wednesday. In his first match since reaching the No. 1 ranking on Monday, Zverev recorded 25 winners and 21 unforced errors. Musetti secured the victory with a final ace, finishing the match with 29 winners and 12 unforced errors. The Italian noted a critical sequence at 5-2 in the tiebreak where he won five consecutive points to help secure the opening set.
Zverev, who won the French Open and US Open earlier this year, described the performance as one of his worst in recent months. Despite the fast indoor surface favoring his aggressive style, the 29-year-old German struggled to maintain rhythm against Musetti. Zverev expressed frustration regarding his status, stating he felt he had to justify his position at the top of the rankings despite his two Grand Slam titles this season.
In other second-round action, Quentin Halys defeated Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (9) after Tiafoe failed to convert four match points. This result officially qualified Frenchman Arthur Fils for the ATP Finals in Turin, scheduled for Nov. 15-22. Ignacio Buse upset fourth-seeded Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-4, while No. 12 Tommy Paul advanced with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Daniel Merida. Following the conclusion of the Paris Masters, only one ATP 250 event remains in Stockholm to determine the final two spots for the season-ending championships.
