Head coach Kevin Stefanski announced Michael Penix Jr. is fully cleared to practice following Atlanta's 34-6 preseason victory against Indianapolis.

Atlanta Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski announced Michael Penix Jr. has been cleared for full practice participation following the team's 34-6 preseason victory over the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday. The rookie quarterback is set to begin 11-on-11 team periods this coming Monday, marking his first full-contact work since undergoing surgery on his left ACL last November. During the win against Indianapolis, the Falcons saw significant production from their reserve passers; Cooper Rush completed 10-of-11 passes for 86 yards, while undrafted rookie Jack Strand from Division III Minnesota State-Moorhead finished 12-of-17 for 212 yards and accounted for two touchdowns, including one on the ground.

Quarterback Competition Resumes on Equal Footing

The medical clearance officially triggers a wide-open battle for the starting role between Penix and veteran Tua Tagovailoa. Atlanta signed Tagovailoa to a one-year, $1.3 million contract during the offseason specifically to compete for the QB1 spot. Until this point, Tagovailoa was the only candidate participating in 11-on-11 drills, as Penix had been restricted to individual drills and 7-on-7 periods since organized team activities (OTAs) began in the spring. Quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt previously noted that the true competition could not commence until both players were fully healthy and available for team-wide sessions.

Recovery Timeline and Injury History

Penix indicated on Thursday that he had a scheduled consultation with his doctor, which resulted in the positive update shared by Stefanski. This recovery follows a significant medical history for the quarterback, who has now undergone three total ACL surgeries. His collegiate career included two separate tears of his right ACL prior to the left ACL injury sustained last year. The transition to full practice ends a long rehabilitation process that limited his involvement throughout the early summer months.

Preseason Performance and Upcoming Schedule

While Penix prepares for his Monday return, the Falcons are evaluating the rest of the depth chart following mixed preseason results. The team previously suffered a 27-7 loss to the Denver Broncos in their preseason opener, a game in which Tagovailoa struggled. Stefanski has maintained a rotation strategy of playing starters in the first and third preseason contests, meaning Tagovailoa is expected to see action in the final exhibition game this Friday against the Miami Dolphins.

Stefanski has not yet confirmed if Penix will make his game debut during that Friday matchup in Miami. The decision comes after a dominant Saturday performance where the Falcons defense held the Colts to just six points. The emergence of Jack Strand, who averaged 12.4 yards per attempt against Indianapolis, adds further depth to a room that now features four active contributors including Rush. The Falcons' coaching staff will now use the upcoming week of practice to evaluate Penix in a full-team setting for the first time since he joined the organization.
