Spain extended their unbeaten streak to 43 games as Mikel Merino scored in the 61st and 89th minutes to defeat Croatia 2-1.
Spain defeated Croatia 2-1 in a UEFA Nations League Group A3 fixture on Tuesday, extending their unbeaten streak to 43 matches. Ivan Perisic opened the scoring for the hosts in Split with a goal in the 17th minute before being sent off later in the match for a second booking. Substitute Mikel Merino leveled the score in the 61st minute and secured the win with an 89th-minute strike, marking his 15th career goal for the national team.
The victory ensures Spain a position in the Nations League quarterfinals next year alongside Portugal. La Roja has now won four consecutive matches since their World Cup triumph, a feat previously achieved only by Argentina in 2022. The team remains undefeated since a friendly loss to Colombia in March 2024 and currently holds a three-point lead over England at the top of their group.
Merino’s late winner continues a trend for the Arsenal midfielder, who has scored four of his last five international goals in the 88th minute or later. Spain concluded the September/October international window with four wins from four matches. Coach Luis de la Fuente noted that the team overcame an aggressive start from a Croatia side coming off a 7-0 loss to England.
