MVP MMA Merger Targets 2027 Launch to Compete Directly With UFC

The PFL and Most Valuable Promotions have merged into MVP MMA, a consolidated banner aiming for a full brand transition by January 1.

Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) and the Professional Fighters League (PFL) announced a merger on Thursday to form a consolidated combat sports entity known as MVP MMA. The new promotion, led by PFL CEO John Martin and MVP co-founders Jake Paul and Nakisa Bidarian, intends to launch with a new U.S. broadcast partner in 2027. This strategic move follows the PFL's 2023 acquisition of Bellator and MVP’s May 16 inaugural MMA event on Netflix, which featured the returns of pioneers Gina Carano and Ronda Rousey.

John Martin aims to have the PFL brand fully transitioned to the MVP MMA banner by January 1. The organization recently signed nearly 20 new fighters from over 10 countries to bolster a roster that Martin describes as the second-best in the world. Current PFL titleholders will retain their championship status through the rebrand, with leadership emphasizing that the "Most Valuable Player" title will be supported by cross-promotion efforts similar to existing partnerships with Rizin in Japan.

Strategic Origins and Broadcast Goals

The merger originated from a text message sent by Nakisa Bidarian to John Martin following Martin’s appearance on Ariel Helwani’s podcast. Although Bidarian suggested a PFL-MVP partnership as early as 2023 during the Bellator acquisition, formal discussions accelerated last fall. Martin noted that while the PFL possessed elite talent, the organization struggled to capture public attention, leading him to seek Jake Paul’s promotional reach and athlete profile to jump-start growth.

Leadership is currently seeking a new U.S. media partner, expressing interest in continuing the PFL’s existing relationship with ESPN or leveraging MVP’s ties with Netflix. Within 24 hours of the merger announcement, every major U.S. distributor reportedly contacted the new entity. Bidarian highlighted that a primary goal is to reach Gen Z and Gen Alpha audiences through constant cultural conversation, citing Jake Paul’s status as the "best boxer in the world" to younger demographics as proof of their marketing efficacy.

Competitive Positioning Against the UFC

Bidarian characterized the new venture as a direct competitor to the UFC, comparing the potential market shift to the rivalry between Pepsi and Coke or Nike and Adidas. The promotion expects to establish itself as a primary alternative to the UFC within 12 to 24 months. The business model will offer athletes flexibility between disciplines, allowing MMA fighters to box and boxers to transition into mixed martial arts under a single promotional roof.

Specific talent development remains a priority, including the promotion of Dakota Ditcheva. Bidarian previously proposed signing Ditcheva to MVP to attach her brand to Jake Paul and Amanda Serrano, a move that was initially met with resistance under previous PFL leadership but is now supported by Martin. The organization also claims to house pound-for-pound elite talent such as Usman Nurmagomedov to challenge the UFC's market dominance.

Future Roster and Event Expansion

The PFL, which launched in 2018 and utilizes a tournament format, has managed 14 different products in the marketplace. The merger seeks to simplify this output while maintaining an aggressive free-agent pursuit. Martin confirmed that the recent signing of 20 athletes was intended to move ahead of promotional efforts by Scott Coker.

Upcoming events include a PFL card in New York featuring Dakota Ditcheva’s return against Denise Kielholtz. As the promotion prepares for its 2027 launch, leadership continues to evaluate the impact of TKO’s Zuffa Boxing on their competitive landscape. The organization remains focused on demonstrating its value to streamers and traditional networks to secure a broadcast deal that provides consistent weekly promotion.
