The San Francisco 49ers are signing free agent wide receiver Brandin Cooks to their practice squad, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Tuesday. The 32-year-old veteran joins the roster as the team manages injuries to receivers Ricky Pearsall, De'Zhaun Stribling, and Demarcus Robinson. Additionally, the Niners are monitoring veteran Mike Evans, who requires management this week due to a hip injury.
Cooks enters San Francisco with 734 career receptions, 9,811 yards, and 62 total touchdowns accumulated over 12 NFL seasons. Originally the 20th overall pick by the New Orleans Saints in 2014, he most recently played for the Buffalo Bills in 2025. His tenure in Buffalo ended after a divisional round loss to the Denver Broncos, where a contested overtime catch by Cooks was ruled an interception by Ja'Quan McMillian.
The veteran wideout has previously played for the Patriots, Rams, Texans, and Cowboys, including appearances in Super Bowls LII and LIII. According to ESPN, the practice squad signing is intended to allow Cooks to get up to speed for game action. He returns to the NFC West after totaling three years with the Saints and a stint with the Rams earlier in his career.
