San Diego secured a 4-1 victory in Game 2 on Wednesday, limiting the Chicago Cubs to just five hits to finalize a two-game sweep.
The San Diego Padres defeated the Chicago Cubs 4-1 on Wednesday night at Petco Park to complete a two-game sweep of the NL Wild Card Series. Five San Diego pitchers limited Chicago to five hits in the clinching victory, following an 8-0 shutout in Tuesday's opener. Gavin Sheets provided the offensive highlight with a pinch-hit two-run home run, while Xander Bogaerts recorded the team's first RBI of the contest.
Ethan Salas made major league history during the win, becoming the youngest player to catch a postseason game. The Padres offense also saw an RBI from Salas to help secure the result. Despite leading the majors in runs and the National League in home runs during the regular season, the Cubs were held to eight total hits and seven singles across 18 innings in the series.
San Diego has now won 19 of its last 22 games dating back to Sept. 5. This victory marks the franchise's fifth playoff series win in seven years and serves as a reversal of last year's wild-card results, where Chicago eliminated San Diego in three games. The Padres move on to face the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Division Series, with Game 1 scheduled for Saturday in Milwaukee. During the regular season, San Diego won four of six matchups against the Brewers.
