Florida Panthers center Aleksander Barkov has been placed on long-term injured reserve following a left leg injury sustained against the San Jose Sharks.

Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov has been placed on long-term injured reserve, a move that sidelines the center for at least the next 10 games. The injury occurred during the second period of Florida's 4-3 overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks on Thursday night. Barkov fell awkwardly with his left leg at an unnatural angle after being pushed by Darnell Nurse while jostling for the puck along the boards.

Sources told ESPN's Emily Kaplan that an MRI performed this weekend did not reveal a worst-case scenario, leading the organization to remain optimistic that the injury is not season-ending. Barkov, who went scoreless through the first two games of the 2026-27 season, will continue to undergo evaluation. The 31-year-old center previously missed the entire 2025-26 campaign due to torn ligaments in his right knee.

Following the collision on Thursday, Barkov remained down for several moments before walking to the dressing room with a limp. The Panthers, who are scheduled to play the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday, have not disclosed specific medical details regarding the nature of the damage to his left leg. Barkov served as a primary contributor to the franchise's Stanley Cup championships in 2024 and 2025.
