Playing at Detroit Golf Club, the 39-year-old tied the tournament scoring record with a bogey-free performance that featured nine birdies. Malnati, who previously earned PGA Tour victories in 2015 and 2024, leads a chasing pack headed by Rickie Fowler and Ryan Gerard, both of whom signed for 8-under 63s.

Starting his round on the first tee, Malnati opted for a driver despite his caddie’s suggestion to play conservatively. The resulting tee shot landed in the center of the fairway, setting up the first of seven birdies he would record on the front nine. His momentum continued onto the back nine, where he drained a 55-foot birdie putt on the 11th hole. By the time he completed the 13th, he sat at 9 under par for the day. Michael Brennan provided a significant highlight by recording eight consecutive birdies, falling just one shy of the all-time PGA Tour record. Despite starting 2 over through his first four holes, Brennan recovered to post a 5-under 65, placing him four shots back alongside Keegan Bradley.

Lower down the leaderboard, world No. 3 Cameron Young opened with a 1-under 69. Wyndham Clark, the reigning U.S. Open champion, struggled to a 1-over par start. The field is competing for positioning in the FedEx Cup postseason, as only the top 70 players advance following this event and next week’s Wyndham Championship.

Detroit Golf Club underwent a $16 million renovation prior to this year’s event to align the layout with Donald Ross’s original century-old vision. The project included converting two par-5 holes into par 4s and adding numerous bunkers to increase the difficulty. Despite these adjustments, the course continued its reputation as a high-scoring venue, a trend established when the tournament launched in 2019 to end a Michigan PGA Tour drought that began after Tiger Woods won the final Buick Open.

Malnati noted that he did not feel the usual level of anxiety during his record-tying round, even as thoughts of shooting a sub-60 score entered his mind. His performance comes during a season where he has missed more cuts than he has made, providing a statistical turnaround at a critical juncture in the schedule.

This week marks the conclusion of the Rocket Classic as the PGA Tour prepares for a new model in 2028 that effectively splits the circuit into two tiers. Organizers in Detroit declined to continue the event, citing the $15 million annual cost for a second-tier spot and the prohibitive expense of doubling that investment to join the elite tier. Fowler expressed disappointment regarding the tournament's departure, noting the significance of the event to the local community since its inception by a Detroit-based mortgage company.
