The Philadelphia Union clinched a best-of-three MLS Cup playoff series after Cavan Sullivan scored twice in a 4-1 win over Toronto FC.
The Philadelphia Union (14-12-8) secured an automatic berth in the MLS Cup playoffs with a 4-1 victory over Toronto FC on Saturday. Cavan Sullivan scored in the 28th and 58th minutes, while Quinn Sullivan converted a penalty in the 41st. Bruno Damiani capped the scoring with a 73rd-minute penalty kick. Toronto FC (9-13-12) managed one goal in first-half stoppage time when Josh Sargent headed in a corner kick delivered by Djordje Mihailovic.
Cavan and Quinn Sullivan became the third pair of brothers in MLS history to score for the same club in a single match. Quinn Sullivan provided the assists for both of Cavan’s goals, including a cross that Indiana Vassilev settled to set up the 28th-minute opener and a pass following a Damiani flick header for the 58th-minute strike. With his brace, 17-year-old Cavan Sullivan reached 23 goal contributions this season, surpassing Diego Fagúndez’s 2013 record for the most by a teenager in a single MLS regular season.
Philadelphia finished sixth in the Eastern Conference with 50 points and will face the No. 3 seed New England Revolution in the first round. Since interim head coach Ryan Richter assumed leadership during the World Cup break, the Union have earned 43 out of a possible 57 points. The match also marked the final regular-season appearance for captain Alejandro Bedoya, who entered the game as a late substitute.
