Pro Ref Issues Apology to Manchester United for Haaland Derby Winner 'Error'

Pro Ref admitted that VAR Matthew Donohue and assistant VAR Blake Antrobus failed to recommend an on-field review for Erling Haaland’s 60th-minute goal.

Manchester City defeated Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford behind a 60th-minute goal from Erling Haaland. The Premier League referees' body, Pro Ref, has since issued an apology to United, admitting the VAR awarded the Haaland derby winner by "error." The scoring sequence began with a deflected cross from Josko Gvardiol, which Haaland finished at the far post. While the assistant referee initially flagged for offside, VAR Matthew Donohue and assistant VAR Blake Antrobus overruled the decision, determining that City midfielder Enzo Fernández was not active or interfering with play despite a challenge from defender Lisandro Martínez.

Pro Ref clarified that while Haaland himself was in an onside position, the VAR failed to recognize the impact of Fernández's position. The referees' body stated that a subjective offside offense occurred and the officials should have recommended an on-field review. United manager Michael Carrick described the officiating as "worrying," and Martínez labeled the goal an "injustice." Pro Ref confirmed a formal review of the incident will take place.

The result leaves Manchester City tied with Arsenal for maximum points through four matches. Manchester United currently sits in 13th place with a record of one win, one draw, and two losses. During the match, Manchester City played short-handed following a red card for Phil Foden, while Carrick suggested United's Bruno Fernandes should have also been sent off.
