BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Buffalo Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin welcomed his fiancee, Carolina Matovac, back to the KeyBank Center on Wednesday for the team's matchup against the Boston Bruins. The appearance marked the first time Matovac attended a game in Buffalo since suffering heart failure during a summer vacation in France. During the first period of the contest, the Sabres organization featured Matovac on the arena video board, prompting the crowd to cheer while Sabres players showed their support by slapping their sticks against the boards. This return follows a seven-month recovery period in Sweden, during which Dahlin made several short trips to visit her while managing his NHL schedule.
Medical Emergency and Heart Transplant Details
The medical crisis involving the Rasmus Dahlin fiancee began last summer when she fell ill for several days prior to her heart failing. Dahlin previously disclosed via the team’s website in September that the situation was dire, noting that Matovac required cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on multiple occasions. These life-saving measures lasted for up to two hours at a time during the most critical moments of the emergency. Following the initial failure, Matovac remained on life support for several weeks before a donor match was found, allowing her to undergo a lifesaving heart transplant procedure.
Pregnancy Complications and Discovery
In January, Matovac shared further details regarding the circumstances surrounding her heart failure, revealing that she was pregnant at the time the medical issue began. She credited the unborn child with playing a vital role in the eventual discovery of her underlying heart problem. Despite the medical intervention and the transplant that saved Matovac’s life, the fetus did not survive the ordeal. This revelation added a layer of complexity to the recovery process she underwent in the couple's native Sweden before she was cleared to travel back to the United States this week.
Return to Buffalo and Team Support
Rasmus Dahlin has served as the Sabres captain throughout this season while Matovac remained overseas for specialized post-operative care. Upon reporting for training camp in September, the defenseman chose to be transparent with the Buffalo community by posting a message on the team website to explain her absence and the severity of her condition. Wednesday's recognition during the first period served as the official public welcome for Matovac, who waved to the fans in attendance as she watched Dahlin and his teammates compete against Boston. The couple had been separated by the Atlantic for the majority of the last seven months while she regained her strength following the transplant surgery.
