The Cleveland Guardians saw their championship drought reach 78 years following a 7-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 6 of the ALCS.
The Tampa Bay Rays advanced to the World Series on Monday night by defeating the Cleveland Guardians 7-3 in St. Petersburg, Florida. The victory secured the American League Championship Series for the Rays in six games, marking their third consecutive win to close out the series. Cleveland’s loss extends the franchise's championship drought to 78 consecutive years, the longest active streak in Major League Baseball.
Junior Caminero provided a pivotal blow for Tampa Bay in the seventh inning, hitting a two-run home run off Cleveland closer Cade Smith to extend the lead to 5-1. The Guardians struggled offensively throughout the series, batting just .194 with runners in scoring position. ALCS MVP Freddy Peralta led the Rays' pitching staff, allowing only one run across 12 innings of work.
Cleveland relied on a limited starting rotation featuring Parker Messick and Gavin Williams. Messick completed five innings only once during the postseason, while Williams was held back for a potential Game 7 that never occurred. Right-hander Tanner Bibee, who made 33 regular-season starts, pitched just one-third of an inning in the playoffs following a difficult September. Left-hander Foster Griffin provided bulk relief innings but required an opener for both of his appearances. This marks the fourth time in five years that Cleveland has failed to advance past the ALCS.
