Detroit leading scorer Alex DeBrincat signed a seven-year extension worth $13 million annually following a three-point game against New Jersey.
The Detroit Red Wings announced Wednesday that right wing Alex DeBrincat has signed a seven-year contract extension worth $13 million annually. The 28-year-old, who currently leads the team with eight points this season, was eligible for the new deal this summer. Under the current collective bargaining agreement, seven years was the maximum term available for the agreement, which was executed by interim general manager Shawn Horcoff.
The signing follows Detroit’s 5-4 home loss to the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday during the NHL's Frozen Frenzy. In that contest, DeBrincat recorded two goals and one assist. The Red Wings currently sit in last place in the Atlantic Division with a 1-3-2 record and have struggled recently, including a 2-0 shutout loss to the New York Rangers on Oct. 2.
DeBrincat is now in his 10th NHL season and has reached career totals of 296 goals and 600 points. He has appeared in every game for the past five full 82-game seasons. While securing DeBrincat, Horcoff continues to manage a trade request from former captain Dylan Larkin and the unsigned status of restricted free agent defenseman Simon Edvinsson, who is currently away from the team.
