The 30-year-old Spain international signed with the Catalan side after seven years in England, despite receiving interest from Real Madrid manager José Mourinho. According to an interview with Mundo Deportivo, Rodri personally called Mourinho to decline the offer after the coach expressed his desire for the midfielder to join the Madrid squad.

Rodri cited sporting aspects and the influence of Barcelona sporting director Deco and manager Hansi Flick as the primary reasons for his decision. The midfielder has integrated into a Barcelona team that won all six of its opening matches this season, including five victories in LaLiga and one in the Champions League. During this six-game winning streak, Flick's side has scored 26 total goals, including a recent 4-2 win against Levante.

Barcelona is targeting its first Champions League title in 11 years, having already secured back-to-back LaLiga trophies. Flick has instructed the new signing to maintain a non-conformist attitude and avoid believing he has reached his limit. Rodri noted that his role involves providing leadership and experience to a young squad that is currently leading the Spanish top flight.
