New Orleans Saints wide receiver Jordyn Tyson, the No. 8 overall pick, may be sidelined until Week 6 following a hamstring injury sustained in Oxnard.
New Orleans Saints rookie wide receiver Jordyn Tyson could be sidelined for the next two months following a right hamstring injury sustained during a joint practice session with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday. The 22-year-old Arizona State product, selected eighth overall in the recent NFL draft, sought multiple medical opinions regarding the ailment before Ian Rapoport and Mike Garofolo of the NFL Network reported the potential eight-week recovery timeline on Monday. This projected window suggests the wideout may not return to action until Week 6, coinciding with the Saints' scheduled matchup against the New York Giants.
The injury occurred in Oxnard, California, after Tyson secured a reception and landed awkwardly on the turf. Witnesses observed the receiver getting up slowly to test his leg before he eventually jogged off the practice field accompanied by athletic trainers. He did not participate in the remainder of the session. New Orleans is set to begin its regular season campaign on Sept. 13 against the Detroit Lions, a contest Tyson is now expected to miss. Following the Week 6 game against the Giants, the organization is slated to depart for a week-long trip to Paris.
Kellen Moore Addresses Injury Specifics
Saints coach Kellen Moore provided insight into the nature of the setback on Friday, noting that the team was still gathering information before establishing a definitive return date. Moore emphasized that this specific right hamstring issue is distinct from the hamstring complications Tyson experienced during his collegiate career at Arizona State. The coach described the incident as a situational physical mishap rather than a recurring chronic problem, citing a sequence where the player's foot slipped while he was simultaneously shoved from behind.
According to Moore, any athlete subjected to those specific physical forces would likely face a similar diagnosis regardless of their medical history. The coaching staff had previously implemented a cautious approach with the first-round selection during rookie minicamp, OTAs, and veteran minicamp earlier this offseason. However, once training camp commenced, Tyson had been a full participant in every daily session, only sitting out of specific one-on-one drills against defensive backs prior to the Thursday practice incident.
Training Camp Performance and Travel Logistics
Before the injury, Tyson earned praise from the coaching staff for his performance throughout the summer. Moore stated that the rookie had played "really good football" and described the setback as an unfortunate reality of preseason competition. The Saints traveled to California on Monday to engage in further joint practices with both the Dallas Cowboys and the Los Angeles Rams. As of Friday, Moore had not confirmed if Tyson would join the team for the West Coast trip or remain at the team's primary facility to continue his rehabilitation.
Players who are not expected to participate in the California work sessions often stay behind to utilize the team's specialized equipment and training staff. The Saints are currently working through several similar injury situations involving other members of the roster. Despite the two-month projection, Moore expressed confidence in Tyson’s ability to recover, stating the receiver has done a great job and will be "good to go" once the healing process is complete. The team continues to navigate the preseason schedule while awaiting the rookie's eventual return to the active lineup.
