The Louisiana native, who initially considered skipping the tournament following the July 3 birth of his daughter, Belle, followed his record-tying 62 with a performance that places him ahead of New Zealander Ryan Fox and South Korea's Si Woo Kim. Fox surged into the final group by matching the major championship record with an 8-under 62, moving from even par to 8-under for the tournament. Kim joined him in second place after posting a 67 during his third round in Southport, England.

Leaderboard Dynamics and Record-Breaking Rounds

Ryan Fox utilized an aggressive strategy on wedge shots to become the third player this week to record a 62, tying the all-time low score for a major championship. While Fox and Kim sit two strokes back, Bryson DeChambeau remains in contention despite a two-shot penalty on Friday for improving the area of his swing. DeChambeau, the only player in the current top 10 with a major title, shot a 69 on Saturday. His round included two late birdies before a bogey on the 18th hole, leaving him four shots behind Burns at 6-under par. Local favorite Tommy Fleetwood also remains within striking distance after a 69 placed him five shots off the lead.

Scottie Scheffler, the defending champion, sits six strokes behind the leader after a round of 70. Scheffler’s performance was hindered by continued difficulties on the greens, as he struggled to convert putts throughout the day. Among the leaders, Burns is seeking his first major victory after several near misses in recent years. He previously held the 54-hole lead at the U.S. Open at Oakmont, where wet fairway conditions impacted his ball control, and finished just one stroke shy of a playoff at the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills last month after missing a 17-foot putt on the final green.

Burns’ presence at the Open Championship was uncertain until one week ago. His wife, Caroline, was due to give birth during the week of the tournament, but the arrival of their daughter two weeks prior allowed him to travel to England. Despite the distractions of playing alongside DeChambeau, who drew significant gallery support and engaged playfully with fans, Burns maintained his focus to card five birdies in his third round. The leader noted that he feels he has nothing to lose given he did not expect to compete at Royal Birkdale this year. He enters Sunday facing a field where nine of the top 10 players are searching for their maiden major championship title.
