Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold is expected to miss the team's Week 2 game against the Arizona Cardinals on Sept. 20 following a right hip injury sustained during a 13-10 victory over the New England Patriots. Darnold was injured on the fifth play of Wednesday night's game when his knee hit the turf during a sack. Although coach Mike Macdonald described Thursday's MRI results as "really, really good news," sources told ESPN and NFL Network that the 29-year-old will likely be sidelined for the upcoming road contest.
Backup Drew Lock replaced Darnold and rallied Seattle from a 10-0 third-quarter deficit. Lock completed 16 of 22 passes for 187 yards and threw a game-tying 45-yard touchdown pass to Jaxon Smith-Njigba in the fourth quarter. Macdonald indicated on Seattle Sports 710 AM that he expects Lock to start against the Cardinals while Darnold recovers from what appears to be a muscular injury. Darnold spent Wednesday night at Harborview Medical Center due to significant discomfort, though his hip remains intact.
Lock returns to a starting role with a career 10-18 record as a starter since entering the league in 2019. He previously went 1-1 for Seattle in 2023 and 1-4 for the New York Giants in 2024. Following the Week 2 matchup in Arizona, the Seahawks are scheduled to face the Washington Commanders, Los Angeles Chargers, and San Francisco 49ers. Sources indicated that while Darnold will miss immediate time, he is expected to return sooner rather than later.
