Scottie Scheffler secured his second FedEx Cup in three years on Sunday, finishing the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club with a three-stroke victory over Viktor Hovland. Entering the final round trailing by three shots, Scheffler carded a 4-under 66 to reach a winning total of 16 under par, while Hovland finished at 13 under. The victory earned Scheffler a $10 million winner’s purse, elevating his career on-course earnings to approximately $130.4 million. This total surpasses Tiger Woods’ long-standing record of $121 million, ending a 26-year reign at the top of the PGA Tour career earnings list.

Scheffler’s performance at East Lake marked his 22nd career PGA Tour victory and his second win of the current playoff stretch. Two weeks prior, he captured the opening leg at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee, by an eight-stroke margin. Despite battling hand, foot and mouth disease—a viral illness that caused blisters on his hands—Scheffler managed a tie for 12th at the BMW Championship in St. Louis just one week before his triumph in Atlanta.

Back-Nine Duel at East Lake

The final round saw a head-to-head battle between the world No. 1 and Hovland. Scheffler initiated his charge early, recording two birdies in his first four holes, including a near-ace on the par-3 second hole. By the turn, Scheffler was 2-under for the day, and he pulled even with Hovland at 14 under following an 8 ½-foot birdie putt on the 10th hole. A subsequent birdie on the 13th gave Scheffler a one-stroke lead, though a bogey on the par-4 14th briefly returned the match to a tie.

The tournament shifted decisively on the 16th hole. Scheffler drove his ball 317 yards into a left fairway bunker but recovered by hitting his approach to within 11 feet. He converted the birdie putt to move two strokes clear. Moments later, Hovland missed an 8-foot birdie attempt on the same hole. On the par-4 17th, Scheffler recorded a par, while Hovland sent his 103-yard approach over the green into deep rough, resulting in a bogey that extended the final margin to three.

Historic Statistical Milestones

With this victory, Scheffler joins Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and Phil Mickelson as the only players to win the Tour Championship multiple times since its 1987 inception. His previous win at East Lake occurred in 2024, where he defeated Collin Morikawa by four strokes after starting the event with a two-shot lead due to the starting strokes format. This season, Scheffler recorded five runner-up finishes and 11 top-five placements across his first 17 starts, maintaining his status as the world No. 1 despite having only one regular-season win.

Scheffler is now positioned to join Tiger Woods as the only golfers to win the PGA Tour Player of the Year award five consecutive times. Woods achieved this feat between 1999 and 2003. The announcement for the award is scheduled for December. Scheffler's consistency this year stood against a field of multiple-time winners, including U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Chris Gotterup.
