New York Yankees rookie outfielder Spencer Jones hit a towering flyball off a catwalk at Tropicana Field that resulted in an out during the second inning of ALDS Game 2 on Monday night. The ball struck one of the two rings located below the stadium roof and above the field, rattling around before falling into the glove of Tampa Bay Rays right fielder Victor Mesa Jr.

Although center fielder Jonny DeLuca originally positioned himself under the ball, he began pointing upward once it made contact with the structure. Mesa Jr. eventually secured the catch several feet in front of DeLuca in center field. Umpires conferred following the play and confirmed the out based on the stadium's specific ground rules.

This event marked the second instance of a roof impacting play during the current postseason. On Saturday night, Ty France of the San Diego Padres hit a ninth-inning drive that struck a cable on the retractable roof at American Family Field. That ball, which appeared to be a potential go-ahead home run, was caught on the warning track by Milwaukee Brewers left fielder Jackson Chourio to secure an out in a 3-2 Brewers victory.
