Giancarlo Stanton suffered a moderate grade left calf strain while rehabbing a right calf injury, stalling his return after appearing in only 24 games this year.
New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced Saturday that Giancarlo Stanton suffered a "moderate grade" left calf strain during a base-running mishap this week. The 36-year-old slugger, who has been sidelined since April, sustained the new injury while rehabilitating a previous right calf strain. Stanton had appeared in only 24 games this season—exclusively as a designated hitter—before his initial placement on the injured list on April 27. Prior to the setback, he was nearing a return to a Yankees offense that has been without him since he exited a game against the Houston Astros on April 24.
Stanton’s 2026 campaign has been limited to a .852 OPS during his healthy stretches, but he has not seen live action since the spring. The veteran currently leads all active MLB players with 456 career home runs and remains under contract for $25 million next season. His deal includes a $25 million club option for 2028, which carries a $10 million buyout. Boone noted that while the team is not ruling anything out regarding a return this calendar year, the timing makes a comeback challenging.
Cody Bellinger Returns to Active Roster
While Stanton faces a setback, Cody Bellinger is scheduled to come off the injured list this Sunday. Bellinger has been sidelined since July 26 with a hamstring strain but completed a two-game rehab assignment with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. On Thursday, Bellinger served as the designated hitter and finished 1-for-3 at the plate. He followed that performance on Friday by playing six innings in left field, where he went hitless in three at-bats while testing his leg.
Bellinger’s return provides a boost to a Yankees roster that has struggled offensively in the absence of its primary stars. The outfielder expressed confidence in his recovery after the Triple-A stints, noting that the reps were essential to feeling ready for major league competition. He joins the lineup as the team continues to monitor the progress of other key contributors.
Aaron Judge Progressing from Rib Fracture
Aaron Judge continues his recovery from a stress fracture in a rib, an injury that has kept him out of the lineup since May 31. Boone reported that Judge has recently transitioned to hitting off a tee, supplementing his existing regimen of throwing, running, and weightlifting. The manager emphasized that Judge’s current focus is rebuilding strength and endurance following a prolonged period of inactivity.
Judge, Stanton, and Bellinger were identified by the organization as the three crucial position players expected to drive the offense during the late-season push. However, Stanton’s history of lower-body issues continues to be a factor; he has played 114 or fewer games in six of the last seven non-shortened seasons. Last year, he was limited to 77 games due to tendonitis in both elbows, though he managed to belt 24 home runs and post a .944 OPS after debuting on June 16.
Impact on Yankees Championship Pursuit
The Yankees are currently pursuing their first World Series title since 2009, a goal that Stanton has actively supported despite his physical limitations. Boone highlighted that the slugger remains a constant presence in daily hitters' meetings and "in the trenches" with his teammates. Since being acquired from the Miami Marlins—where he won the 2017 National League MVP with 59 home runs—Stanton has struggled with availability, despite a strong 158-game debut season in New York where he hit 38 home runs. The team now waits to see if his latest calf injury will officially end his season or if a late-September return remains possible.
