Strasbourg secured 20-year-old forward Jacobo Ortega on a five-year deal after generating €50m from selling Julio Enciso and Abdoul Ouattara to Ipswich.
Strasbourg completed the signing of 20-year-old center forward Jacobo Ortega from the Real Madrid academy on Monday, securing the attacker on a five-year contract. The deal is valued at a reported €10 million ($11.6 million) and comes as the French club generates more than five times that fee through a double sale to Ipswich. The newly-promoted Premier League side paid a combined €50 million ($58 million) to acquire Paraguay international Julio Enciso and 20-year-old midfielder Abdoul Ouattara from the Ligue 1 outfit. Both Enciso and Ouattara signed five-year agreements to reunite with coach Gary O'Neil, who managed Strasbourg during the second half of the previous campaign.
Financial Restructuring and UEFA Compliance
Strasbourg, owned by Chelsea’s holding company BlueCo, is currently operating under intense financial scrutiny from UEFA. The club was issued a €13 million ($15 million) fine in June for overspending, which represented the largest penalty handed out by the European football governing body during the last season. To address these concerns, UEFA advised the club to significantly decrease player costs in 2026. Following the recent transactions, Strasbourg’s offseason trading shows a profit of approximately €80 million ($92 million). This total includes two major transfers to parent club Chelsea, which signed Strasbourg captain Emmanuel Emegha and Argentina midfielder Valentín Barco.
Ortega’s Profile and Recent Success
Jacobo Ortega arrives in France having never made a first-team appearance for Real Madrid. However, the forward was a key contributor to Madrid’s victory in the UEFA Youth League last season, a competition considered the Champions League for under-19 squads. Ortega scored in the final against Club Brugge held in Lausanne. That championship match ended in a 1-1 draw before Madrid secured the title via a penalty shootout. His arrival follows Strasbourg's acquisition of United States midfielder Giovanni Reyna from Borussia Mönchengladbach earlier this month.
Enciso’s International and Club Impact
Julio Enciso leaves Strasbourg after a summer where he started all five of Paraguay’s matches at the World Cup. During that tournament, he scored a goal against Germany in the round of 32. His international campaign also included a 4-1 defeat to the United States and a 1-0 loss to France in the round of 16, a match described as testy and aggressive. Enciso returns to Ipswich, where he previously spent time on loan two seasons ago when the club was last competing in the Premier League.
Strasbourg Season Performance Review
Despite reaching the UEFA Conference League semifinals last season, Strasbourg failed to qualify for any European competitions for the upcoming term. The club finished in eighth place in the Ligue 1 standings. The recent influx of capital from the €50 million Ipswich deal and the sales to Chelsea are intended to stabilize the club's balance sheet following the record-setting UEFA fine. The French side continues to overhaul its roster under the direction of BlueCo as they look to improve upon their top-half domestic finish without the distraction of continental play.
