Sungjae Im Takes 133 Total into Weekend for One-Shot Valspar Championship Lead

Sungjae Im moved to 9-under par overall following a second-round 69 to lead David Lipsky by one stroke at the Valspar Championship.

Sungjae Im posted a 2-under 69 on Friday to reach a 9-under 133 total, securing a one-stroke Valspar Championship lead at the Innisbrook Resort's Copperhead course. The 27-year-old South Korean golfer, who previously won the 2020 Honda Classic and 2021 Shriners Children's Open, sits one shot ahead of David Lipsky. Im entered the second round following a Thursday 64 that featured two eagles and provided a one-shot advantage over Brandt Snedeker. Despite missing two consecutive cuts recently due to a wrist injury, Im navigated the firm and fast conditions in Palm Harbor, Florida, to maintain his position at the top of the leaderboard heading into the weekend.

David Lipsky surged into solo second place with a 6-under 65, the lowest score among the early starters off the first tee. Lipsky, who remains winless on the PGA Tour, opened his round with consecutive birdies on the first and second holes before adding two more gains within his first six. After recording further birdies on the 10th and 11th, he closed with seven straight pars to finish at 8-under par. Lipsky noted that he holed putts early to build momentum and managed to save pars on the difficult 16th and 18th holes to keep his round intact.

Leaderboard Movement at Innisbrook

Chandler Blanchet and Doug Ghim share third place at 7-under par. Blanchet signed for a 5-under 66 despite finishing his Friday session with a bogey. Ghim carded a 4-under 67, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 11th hole. However, Ghim surrendered those gains late in the day with back-to-back bogeys on the 15th and 16th. Reflecting on his performance, Ghim stated that two bad holes did not necessarily ruin a good day of play.

Further down the standings, a group of players sits at 5-under par, including U.S. Presidents Cup captain Brandt Snedeker. Playing on a sponsor exemption, the 45-year-old Snedeker struggled to a 1-over 72 on Friday after his opening 65. He described the afternoon conditions as tricky and tough but remained positive about hanging in during the difficult stretch. Joining him at 5-under are Jordan Smith (68), Alex Smalley (69), Marco Penge (68), and Matt Fitzpatrick (69). Fitzpatrick entered this week following a second-place finish at The Players Championship.

Performance Analysis of Major Champions

Jordan Spieth is also positioned at 5-under par following a second-round 68. Spieth remarked that while he hit the ball better on Thursday, his putting improved during Friday's round, expressing a goal to combine both elements over the final 36 holes. Brooks Koepka, returning to the Innisbrook field, shot a 4-under 67 to move into a tie for 10th place at 4-under par total. Koepka’s round could have been lower, but he missed a 3-foot birdie attempt on his 18th hole. He stated he was satisfied with his ball-striking and intended to maintain his current approach.

Defending champion Viktor Hovland will not participate in the weekend rounds after missing the cut. Hovland followed an opening 70 with a 4-over 75 on Friday, failing to advance in his title defense. The field faced increasingly fast green speeds as the afternoon progressed, impacting several late starters.

Im’s Back-Nine Rally and Statistical Breakdown

Sungjae Im’s second round was a tale of two halves. He struggled on the front nine with a 1-over 37, a score comprised of three bogeys and two birdies. His momentum shifted on the inward half starting at the par-5 11th, where he recorded a birdie, followed immediately by another birdie on the par-4 12th. The decisive moment for the Valspar Championship lead occurred on the par-3 17th hole, where Im converted a 7-foot birdie putt to break a tie at the top. This late rally allowed him to edge ahead of the field as the Copperhead course played increasingly difficult due to the dry, firm conditions.
