Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal allowed one run on two hits while striking out five batters in a 41-pitch outing for Team USA.
Defending American League Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal surrendered a leadoff home run on the first pitch of the game Saturday night in Houston, as Great Britain took an early 1-0 lead. Nate Eaton, a 29-year-old Boston Red Sox utility player who recorded just one home run and four RBIs last season, drove a 98-mile-per-hour fastball into deep left-center field to open the scoring. Despite the initial blast, Skubal recovered to strike out five batters and walk none over 3.0 innings of work. The left-hander threw 41 total pitches, 30 of which were strikes, before being replaced by New York Mets starter Clay Holmes at the beginning of the fourth frame. This appearance marked the only scheduled Tarik Skubal WBC start for the tournament.
Following the home run, Skubal utilized 12 pitches in the first inning—nine for strikes—to retire Jazz Chisholm Jr., Harry Ford, and B.J. Murray in succession. The Detroit Tigers ace maintained his rhythm in the second inning, retiring the side in order on another 12-pitch sequence that concluded with a strikeout of Justin Wylie. During his third and final inning on the mound, Skubal recorded three strikeouts, though he allowed Eaton to reach base again via an infield single. Team USA manager Mark DeRosa praised the performance during a FOX broadcast interview, citing a devastating changeup and slider to complement his high-velocity heater.
Pitching Mechanics and Game Atmosphere
Skubal noted that the unique environment of the World Baseball Classic impacted his physical sensation on the mound, stating his legs felt light during the early stages of the contest. He emphasized that the emotions experienced while representing Team USA differed significantly from standard Major League Baseball games. The southpaw’s velocity peaked at 98 miles per hour, a figure DeRosa highlighted while confirming that Skubal would not return for a fourth inning of work. At the time of his exit, Great Britain maintained their 1-0 advantage.
Reflecting on the first-pitch home run, Skubal credited Eaton for successfully attacking a fastball. The pitcher remarked that his primary focus remained on executing his repertoire regardless of the early result. The Houston crowd provided what Skubal described as a "really cool environment," contributing to the intensity of his 55-pitch allotted limit, of which he only required 41 to navigate nine outs.
Arbitration Victory and Contract Status
Beyond his performance on the mound, Skubal addressed his financial future with the Detroit Tigers. The pitcher recently won a record-breaking arbitration hearing in February, securing a $32 million salary for the season. This figure bested the previous arbitration award record of $19.9 million by a significant margin. The hearing followed a $13 million gap in negotiations, where Detroit had countered with an offer of $19 million. Skubal revealed to USA Today Sports that he has not received a long-term extension offer from the club this offseason and does not expect negotiations to resume until the current campaign concludes.
As a player drafted by Detroit in 2018, Skubal expressed a desire to bring a World Series title to the city. He noted that the team's recent additions have made a championship run feel attainable. While industry expectations suggest Skubal could seek a contract exceeding $400 million—a potential record for a pitcher—once he reaches free agency, the ace insisted his current focus is strictly on the upcoming season. He characterized the lack of an extension offer as a team decision that he accepts without distraction.
Roster Transitions and Team USA Strategy
The transition to the bullpen in the fourth inning saw Clay Holmes take over pitching duties for the American squad. Skubal’s departure after 3.0 innings was a planned limitation for his single appearance in the tournament. The Detroit ace leaves the international stage with a stat line featuring two hits allowed, zero walks, and five strikeouts. His performance showcased the "unbelievable stuff" described by his manager, even as the American lineup looked to overcome the 1-0 deficit created by Eaton’s opening swing. Skubal’s focus now shifts back to the Tigers and their aspirations for the 2024 MLB season.
