Jayson Tatum recorded 40 points and a game-winning 17-foot jumper as the Boston Celtics defeated the Brooklyn Nets 125-124 on Tuesday.

Jayson Tatum hit a 17-foot jumper as time expired in overtime to secure a 125-124 Boston Celtics victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday night. Tatum finished with 40 points on 10-of-20 shooting from the field and an 18-of-22 performance from the free-throw line. The win marks Boston's third consecutive victory, while Brooklyn falls to 0-4.

This performance represents Tatum's first 40-point game since returning in March from a torn right Achilles. According to Basketball Reference, he is the first player in NBA history to record at least 40 points and a game-winning buzzer-beater in a game before November. The shot was the third buzzer-beater of his career, tying Bill Sharman for the third-most in franchise history.

Paul George contributed 20 points for Boston, and Derrick White added 16. White gave the Celtics a 114-111 lead late in regulation after converting an and-one dunk off a Tatum assist with 33.7 seconds remaining. However, Brooklyn’s Mikel Brown Jr. forced overtime by hitting a tying 3-pointer with 0.2 seconds left on the clock. Brown Jr., the sixth overall pick in the NBA draft, finished with 17 points but missed a potential go-ahead layup with 2.3 seconds left in the extra period.

Michael Porter Jr. led the Nets with 27 points and 12 rebounds, while Julius Randle scored 24. Brooklyn held a 109-104 lead with 2:57 left in regulation before Boston rallied. The Celtics struggled from deep in the first half, making just 2 of 16 3-point attempts, but improved to 9-of-22 from long range in the second half. Mitchell Robinson went 1-of-4 from the free-throw line for Boston, including two misses with three seconds remaining in regulation.
