Jean improved his professional record to 12-0 after referee Mario Yamasaki halted the contest during the main event of PFL Washington D.C. The finishing sequence began after Jean successfully reversed a Rodriguez takedown, allowing the 28-year-old to rain down a series of punches and elbows from the top position against his immobilized opponent.

This victory marked Jean’s first competitive appearance since August. The championship bout featured significant momentum shifts, with Jean utilizing fast hand speed to control the opening round before Rodriguez responded with aggressive forward pressure in the second frame. The contest was characterized by high-volume punch combinations and multiple submission attempts from both athletes before the third-round stoppage.

Late Replacement Chaos at PFL Washington D.C.

Ernesto Rodriguez, also 28, entered the title fight as a late replacement following a series of logistical shifts. Originally scheduled to face Magomed Umalatov on the undercard, Rodriguez was moved to a preliminary bout against Aaron McKenzie after Umalatov withdrew. The landscape changed again on Thursday when Shamil Musaev, the 2024 PFL season tournament champion, was forced out of the main event due to weight cut problems.

Rodriguez accepted the championship opportunity on two days' notice, marking only his second appearance under the PFL banner. He had previously won his promotional debut in March and entered this title fight seeking his 10th consecutive victory. Despite the loss, which moved his career record to 11-2, Jean praised his opponent’s performance, stating that Rodriguez "really brought it" during the rugged encounter.

The Vacant Welterweight Title History

The PFL welterweight belt had remained unoccupied since February. Ramazan Kuramagomedov originally claimed the title with a win over Musaev but opted for immediate retirement following the bout. This left the hardware available for the scheduled clash between Musaev and Jean, the 2025 champion, before the former's late withdrawal led to the elevation of Rodriguez.

Jean acknowledged the difficulty of the path to the belt, noting that while he expected to become champion, he did not anticipate the specific hardships encountered during the week. "I knew this day would come. I knew it would come today," Jean remarked after the fight. "But I didn't know how hard it was going to be to get it."

Future Matchups and Musaev

Although Jean now possesses the championship hardware, he expressed a desire to face Shamil Musaev once the latter returns to health. Jean indicated that a victory over the 2024 tournament winner would help him fully cement his status and remove the "chip on his shoulder" regarding the circumstances of the title win.

Jean remains the undefeated divisional leader, having navigated three different potential opponents in the lead-up to the Washington D.C. card. The PFL welterweight division now moves forward with Jean as the undisputed titleholder following his successful transition from the 2025 season championship to the primary belt.
