Relief pitcher Tommy Kahnle and the Boston Red Sox have agreed to a minor league contract that includes a $1.5 million salary if he joins the 40-man roster.
Tommy Kahnle and the Boston Red Sox have reached an agreement on a minor league contract, according to several reports. If the 36-year-old right-hander is added to the 40-man roster, he will receive a $1.5 million salary in the major leagues. The deal also provides the relief pitcher with the opportunity to secure an additional $250,000 through performance-based bonuses. This transaction, which was initially reported by the New York Post, brings a veteran presence to the Boston organization following his stint in the American League Central.
During the previous season with the Detroit Tigers, Kahnle posted a 1-5 record and a 4.43 ERA across 66 appearances. He recorded nine saves during that single-year tenure in Detroit. His 2024 campaign was defined by significant statistical fluctuations, beginning with a dominant 1.35 ERA through his first 32 games ending on June 22. This early success was followed by a difficult stretch where he surrendered a 14.85 ERA over 17 games through August 12. However, the righty finished the season on a high note, pitching to a 2.20 ERA during his final 17 outings.
Career Statistics and Major League Experience
Kahnle enters the Boston system with 11 seasons of big league experience under his belt. Over his career, he has compiled an 11-19 record and a 3.61 ERA. His resume includes 17 total saves collected across several different franchises. He debuted with the Colorado Rockies, playing there from 2014 to 2015, before moving to the Chicago White Sox for the 2016 and 2017 seasons.
The veteran has spent the bulk of his recent years in high-leverage environments, most notably with the New York Yankees during two separate stints from 2017 to 2020 and again from 2023 to 2024. He also spent the 2022 season as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Beyond his MLB contributions, Kahnle represented Israel in the World Baseball Classic, where he maintained a perfect 0.00 ERA by throwing two scoreless innings over two separate appearances.
Roster Flexibility and Financial Incentives
The structure of this minor league agreement allows the Red Sox to evaluate Kahnle’s performance before committing a spot on the 40-man roster. The $1.5 million base pay serves as a significant incentive for the pitcher to break camp or earn a mid-season promotion. With the potential for $250,000 in extra earnings, the total value of the deal could reach $1.75 million depending on his activity level and health throughout the upcoming year.
Boston’s acquisition of the experienced reliever addresses a need for depth in the bullpen. By securing a player who has navigated the challenges of the American League East previously with the Yankees, the Red Sox gain a pitcher familiar with the division's hitters. Kahnle’s ability to rebound from a mid-season slump last year suggests a resilience that the coaching staff will look to harness as he competes for a permanent role in the major league relief corps.
