Tortorella, who replaced Bruce Cassidy with eight games remaining in the regular season, orchestrated a 7-0-1 finish to the campaign. Despite a Western Conference finals sweep of the Presidents' Trophy-winning Colorado Avalanche, General Manager Kelly McCrimmon informed the 68-year-old coach that he would not be retained just two days after the season-ending Game 6 loss.

McCrimmon Promotes Ryan Craig

During a meeting held the morning after the championship series concluded, McCrimmon notified Tortorella within one minute of sitting down that the organization would promote Ryan Craig to the head coaching position. Craig previously served as the head coach of the Golden Knights' AHL affiliate. Tortorella described the conversation as honest and expressed respect for the direction of the franchise, despite feeling disappointed by the decision. The veteran coach noted that he had hoped to lead the roster for a longer duration after his short stint behind the bench.

Disciplinary Actions and Second-Round Penalties

The Golden Knights faced significant league discipline during the second round of the playoffs against the Anaheim Ducks. The NHL fined Tortorella $100,000 and stripped the Vegas organization of a second-round pick in the most recent draft. These sanctions followed an incident where Tortorella skipped a postgame news conference. He clarified to The Athletic that the decision was based on bad timing rather than a refusal to speak to the press, explaining that he chose to join his team because Ducks coach Joel Quenneville's media availability had run long.

Tortorella’s Coaching Legacy and Future

At 68 years old, Tortorella is actively seeking his next NHL coaching opportunity, having already led six different franchises throughout his career. His recent success in Vegas ended a decade-long drought where his teams failed to advance past the second round of the postseason. A Stanley Cup winner with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2003-04 season, he remains eager to return to the bench immediately. He characterized the current state of his career as uncertain but emphasized his desire to continue working in the league.

Despite the abrupt exit, Tortorella has maintained communication with his successor, Ryan Craig, whom he labeled a good man and a capable coach. He offered to assist Craig in any way possible as the former AHL coach transitions into the NHL head coaching role. Tortorella admitted he is still processing how close the team came to a championship, yet he remains focused on securing a seventh head coaching job within the league.
