Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated qualifier Kimmer Coppejans 6-3, 7-5 on Thursday in the Shanghai Masters first round. The victory aids the two-time major finalist's move back up the ATP rankings to No. 43, following a midyear slump to No. 87. Tsitsipas, who previously lost in the Japan Open qualifying round and the US Open fourth round, is scheduled to face 18th-seeded Luciano Darderi next.
Hubert Hurkacz advanced with a 6-3, 7-6 (4) win against James Duckworth, fueled by 19 aces. The Polish player now moves into a second-round fixture against No. 10 seed Novak Djokovic. Djokovic enters the tournament following his 102nd career title win at the China Open on Tuesday.
In other tournament action, Matteo Arnaldi eliminated Bernard Tomic with a 6-3, 6-1 victory. Tomic had reached the main draw of an ATP 1000 event for the first time in seven years through qualifying. Top seeds Alexander Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz received opening-round byes, while world No. 1 Jannik Sinner withdrew from the event to recover from a right knee injury.
