Yaxel Lendeborg scored 37 points and made six 3-pointers to lead the Golden State Warriors to a 124-112 victory over the LA Clippers on Sunday night. The 6-foot-10 rookie shot 13-of-19 from the field, marking the highest scoring output for a Warriors rookie since Stephen Curry in 2010. Golden State secured their fourth consecutive win despite resting both Curry and Draymond Green on the front end of a back-to-back.
Lendeborg, who averaged 15.1 points at Michigan last season, converted four of his six 3-pointers off the dribble. Through seven career NBA games, he is averaging 22.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 3.7 assists. This performance followed a collegiate career where he reached the 30-point mark only once in 112 games, yet he has already surpassed that total twice in his first two professional weeks.
Late in the fourth quarter, Lendeborg missed three consecutive 3-point attempts while attempting to reach a 40-point milestone. This shooting stretch allowed the Clippers to reduce the lead to eight points before coach Steve Kerr called a timeout and removed the rookie from the game. Lendeborg later expressed regret, stating he fell into "peer pressure" from teammates De'Anthony Melton and Will Richard to chase the scoring mark rather than maintaining his usual style of play. The Warriors next face the Phoenix Suns on Monday night.
