Alejandro Davidovich Fokina defeated Rafael Jodar 1-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 on Sunday to win the Shanghai Masters. The 27-year-old Spaniard, seeded 25th, rallied from a set and a break down to secure his third title of the 2026 season. The victory marks the biggest achievement of his career following previous ATP 250 wins at the Chengdu Open and in Mallorca earlier this year.
Jodar, the 12th seed, dominated the opening set but faced physical challenges late in the match. The 20-year-old required a trainer for a right thigh massage at 4-3 in the third set and subsequently twisted his left foot while running to the net. Davidovich Fokina utilized his court speed to recover a break in the second set, leveling the score at 3-3 with a backhand pass down the line. The match concluded on Davidovich Fokina's second match point when Jodar failed to return a serve.
To reach the final, Davidovich Fokina saved a match point against Frances Tiafoe in the third round and overcame a one-set deficit against Alexander Zverev in the semifinals. Jodar reached the championship match by defeating former champion Daniil Medvedev. Prior to this victory, Davidovich Fokina had lost his first five career finals, including the 2022 Monte Carlo Masters.
