Alexander Zverev Beats Learner Tien to Clinch Laver Cup for Team Europe

Alexander Zverev defeated Learner Tien 7-6 (3), 6-3 on Sunday to secure a 13-5 victory for Team Europe at the Laver Cup in London. The win provided the final three points necessary for Europe to reach the 13-point threshold, reclaiming the title from Team World with three matches remaining. Zverev’s performance followed a singles loss to Alex de Minaur on Saturday, which had snapped his nine-match winning streak.

Earlier on Sunday, Flavio Cobolli and Jakub Mensik extended the European lead by defeating Taylor Fritz and Alex de Minaur 7-5, 6-3 in doubles play. Because Zverev clinched the title early, Carlos Alcaraz did not need to play his scheduled singles match against de Minaur. Alcaraz had previously contributed points through a doubles win with Mensik on Friday and a singles victory over Fritz on Saturday.

Team Europe has now won six of the nine editions of this event. The 13th-ranked Tien entered the final day having defeated Cobolli in his tournament debut the previous day. Zverev, who won both the French Open and US Open this year, utilized the Sunday scoring format—where each win is worth three points—to finalize the tournament result.
